Hot Blue Chip Stocks To Watch Right Now

It was as much a surprise to StreetAuthority’s co-founder as it was to us. As an experiment, he tried to build a personal portfolio of dividend paying stocks to see if he could get 30 dividend checks in a month. But he achieved far more than the joy of receiving dividends every day. And all he did was simply enroll his securities in an automatic reinvestment program through an online brokerage account.

And before long, our little experiment was beating the market.

Of course we were familiar with the power of the compounding growth of dividend reinvestment. As you can see from the chart below, if you invested $20,000 in securities paying a 7% yield, after 10 years your portfolio would be worth $39,343 with reinvested dividends. And if your holdings happened to boost their dividends by just 5% annually — something even giant blue chip AT&T (NYSE: T) has been able to beat — your portfolio would be sitting at $46,475. That’s an increase of 132.4%. And that’s assuming zero capital gains. That isn’t bad, especially when you consider the S&P 500 Index lost 26.5% in the ten-year period ended in 2009.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By JJ Kinahan]

Deere & Company (NYSE: DE) on Friday became the latest big name to run into that particular buzz saw, missing Wall Street analysts’ average projection for earnings per share with a tally of $3.14 and seeing its shares fall in pre-market futures trading before jumping higher once the market actually opened. Analysts had expected $3.33, according to third-party consensus estimates. In a way, however, DE was a victim of high expectations, because its earnings were up a lot year-over-year but down vs. the Street’s consensus.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Invest In Right Now: MPLX LP(MPLX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The biggest contributor to growth during the quarter was Enbridge Energy’s Bakken assets, where earnings jumped 77% due to the completion of the Bakken Pipeline System last June. Income also rose on the Lakehead System, though that was mostly due to the timing of operating expenses, which helped offset lower pipeline rates resulting from the impact of lower U.S. corporate taxes. The Mid-Continent System’s profitability also improved due to higher storage revenue and lower costs, which offset the impact from the sale of the Ozark Pipeline to MPLX LP (NYSE:MPLX) last year.

So in this spirit, I thought I would share with you a stock you may want to consider for your own portfolio because it is one I have recently purchased myself: oil and gas logistics player MPLX LP (NYSE:MPLX). Here’s why I think it is a company worthy of investment and the recent change to the business that compelled me to buy this stock.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

It was looking like, for the first time in a while, we were going to be able to look at MPLX’s (NYSE:MPLX) most recent earnings report without having to consider some big transaction down the road that would fundamentally change these numbers and render them useless. Then, just a couple days before earnings were released, MPLX’s parent company,Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:MPC), announced a huge acquisition that could have a profound impact on MPLX down the road.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Sunoco LP(SUN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The only segment where earnings declined was the catch-all one labeled “all other,” which houses different investments such as its stake in Sunoco L.P. (NYSE:SUN) and PES, a refining joint venture. PES has struggled due to higher costs, and recently declared bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Energy Transfer’s earnings from Sunoco L.P. declined because that entity sold the bulk of its retail assets and then used that cash to repurchase a portion of Energy Transfer’s investment.

  • [By Stephan Byrd]

Sunoco (NYSE: SUN) and Macquarie Infrastructure (NYSE:MIC) are both mid-cap oils/energy companies, but which is the better investment? We will compare the two businesses based on the strength of their earnings, risk, profitability, dividends, analyst recommendations, valuation and institutional ownership.

  • [By ]

That’s the case for Sunoco (NYSE: SUN). After posting a net loss of $0.09 per share in 2017, the gas station owner is expected to swing to a hefty profit of $2.35 per share in 2018. But of the 14 analysts who follow the company, earnings estimates range as low as $1.22 and as high as $3.35 — so there is a high degree of uncertainty.

LVMH (NASDAQOTH:LVMUY), which owns Tiffany’s rival(and Bogliolo’s former employer) Bulgari, trades at just 25 times this year’s earnings — and analysts expect its EPS to jump 16%. Two years ago, I discussed LVMH (OTCPK:LVMUY) (OTCPK:LVMHF) in another article here on Seeking Alpha. Although I wasnt too impressed with the companys free cash flow yield, I did agree this company deserved a premium valuation. And on top of that, I was expecting its strong growth results to continue in the years ahead. Were now two years later, and LVMH has delivered on every front. Unfortunately the market caught up on that as well, and LVMHs share price has doubled in just two years. And although the LVMH results justify a good performance of the share price, I do think LVMH is getting a little pricey.

Action To Take: Going forward, huge, integrated oil companies like Chevron (NYSE: CVX) and ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) will need to figure out how to evolve in an environment where the price of their primary product remains flat, perhaps for decades. This will translate into flat profits and, perhaps, skinnier dividends. Currently, both stocks trade at 20-plus forward price-to-earnings ratios (PEs), much higher than their attractive historical norms. While the market has bid up these stocks, the higher multiples indicate lower-than-anticipated earnings per share (EPS).

Wall Street suffered a sharp drop on Tuesday, with major benchmarks posting substantial declines in response to a combination of economic factors. The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond climbed above 3% for the first time since 2014, but of greater concern to many market participants were remarks in major corporate earnings reports suggesting that business conditions had likely hit their peak and were poised to deteriorate going forward. With raw materials costs starting to pick up, many manufacturers are reporting inflationary pressures that could hurt profits. Yet even as the broader indexes fell, some individual companies had good news to report. Sanmina (NASDAQ:SANM), Helix Energy Solutions (NYSE:HLX), and Weatherford International (NYSE:WFT) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

The number of days to cover rose from six to 10. The stock’s price at Monday’s market close was $3.51 in a 52-week range of $2.07 to $4.72.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Core Laboratories N.V.(CLB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By ]

America’s oil renaissance is powered almost exclusively by technology, as companies like Schlumberger (SLB) and Core Labs (CLB) are breathing new life into once forgotten wells. Nucor (NUE) has a similar leadership position in the steel industry thanks to technology, and that company will only benefit more that President Trump’s tariffs put the market on a more level playing field.

  • [By Ethan Ryder]

Core Laboratories (NYSE:CLB) – Research analysts at Piper Jaffray Companies dropped their Q2 2018 earnings per share (EPS) estimates for shares of Core Laboratories in a research note issued to investors on Monday, July 2nd. Piper Jaffray Companies analyst I. Macpherson now expects that the oil and gas company will post earnings per share of $0.59 for the quarter, down from their prior forecast of $0.65. • [By Taylor Muckerman]

Muckerman: I can go. That’ll work. One company I’m paying close attention to is Core Labs (NYSE:CLB). They’re based out of the Netherlands, but they have their U.S., maybe global, headquarters in Houston. This is a premier company that’s involved in reservoir description and enhancement services. So, when you’re looking at a well, they can basically recreate the well in their lab and tell you exactly what kind of fluid, what kind of proppants, what kind of chemicals, what kind of pressure. They can tell you exactly how to get the most bang for your buck. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth it in the long run. And this company is just continually buying back shares with their money. They generate tons of free cash flow.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Sunoco LP(SUN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The only segment where earnings declined was the catch-all one labeled “all other,” which houses different investments such as its stake in Sunoco L.P. (NYSE:SUN) and PES, a refining joint venture. PES has struggled due to higher costs, and recently declared bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Energy Transfer’s earnings from Sunoco L.P. declined because that entity sold the bulk of its retail assets and then used that cash to repurchase a portion of Energy Transfer’s investment.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

However, he did rule out the possibility that the company would also roll up its other MLP Sunoco LP (NYSE:SUN). He said that “we’re very pleased with what we’re seeing at SUN as far as the growth that they will be directing that MLP into. And as you know, SUN is younger in the IDR life.” Because of that “for the reasonable future, we don’t see that being rolled up.”

  • [By Joseph Griffin]

Sunoco (NYSE:SUN) released its quarterly earnings results on Wednesday. The oil and gas company reported ($3.74) earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter, missing the consensus estimate of $0.57 by ($4.31), Briefing.com reports. However, one thing the company’s management team made clear on the accompanying conference call was that while the quarter was a disappointment, they’re increasingly optimistic about what they see ahead.

TD Ameritrade clients appeared to take some profits in multiple names during the period. Oil companies were popular sells with ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), BP  PLC (ADR) (NYSE: BP), National-Oilwell Varco Inc. (NYSE: NOV), and Transocean LTD (NYSE: RIG) all net sold. Oil prices traded near three-year highs on higher global demand and possible OPEC-led production cuts. COP and BP both traded at multi-year highs, while NOV and RIG reached 52-week highs, enticing clients to take profits in all four names. Alcoa Corp. (NYSE: AA) traded at levels not seen since before the financial crisis following proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, and was net sold. For the third month in a row, Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) was net sold after CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress regarding the misuse of user data and a beat on earnings.

While pipeline capacity constraints have hurt producers focused on the Permian, it has been a boon for midstream companies in the region, which have been able to quickly sign up shippers for proposed expansion projects. Private equity-backed EPIC Midstream was able to get major Permian producers Apache (NYSE:APA) and Noble Energy (NYSE:NBL) to sign up for a combined 175,000 barrels per day (BPD) on the company’s proposed EPIC Crude Oil Pipeline. EPIC currently plans to build a 440,000 BPD pipeline to ship crude out of the Permian. However, it could expand the line up to 675,00 BPD if there’s enough shipper demand. One of the reasons Noble was quick to sign on is that this line “provides long-term flow assurance for our rapidly growing Delaware Basin oil volumes,” according to the company. Apache, meanwhile, stated that this line “enhances our long-term operational flexibility and market optionality.” EPIC hopes to start construction on the pipeline later this year, which would put it in service by the second half of 2019. It’s one of the first projects by the private equity-backed start-up but likely won’t be its last given the infrastructure needs in the region.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Enbridge Inc(ENB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Several high-yielding dividend stocks have taken it on the chin this year due to a sell-off in the stock market and rising interest rates. That one-two punch has hit pipeline stocks the hardest, with several top-notch companies tumbling by a double-digit percentage since the start of the year. Three that stand out as excellent options to consider buying now that they’re on sale are Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), Antero Midstream Partners (NYSE:AM), and Enbridge (NYSE:ENB).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Natural gas pipeline giant Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB) announced today that it agreed to acquire the rest of its master limited partnership (MLP) Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) that it didn’t already own in a $10.5 billion deal. Not to be outdone, Canadian energy infrastructure giant Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) made an offer to acquire its namesake MLP Enbridge Energy Partners (NYSE:EEP), along with the rest of its publicly traded entities, including Spectra Energy Partners (NYSE:SEP). These transactions have big implications not only for investors in these entities but for those who own other pipeline companies, too.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Last November, Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) outlined its three-year strategic and financial plan. One of the key components of the Canadian pipeline giant’s strategy was selling 3 billion Canadian dollars’ ($2.3 billion as of May 9, 2018) worth of non-core assets in 2018, which would give it some of the cash needed to finance its CA$22 billion ($17 billion) expansion plan. That would enable the company to reduce debt while still growing cash flow and the dividend at a 10% compound annual rate through 2020.
