Top Biotech Stocks To Own For 2018

Weeks 2 and 3 presented a sort of mixed bag, placing my personal pet holding Advaxis (ADXS) on notice and ultimately bowing out of one of the lots in the plan.

So how is the plan faring? First, let’s get to the recap of the rules, which are laid out in full in the original article.

First, 6 biotech stocks were chosen to receive investments of $2,000 each, broken into 4 lots:

Short-term: To be traded at a range of 5% gain and loss. That is, sell this lot when it gains 5%, and buy back in when it falls 5% from the sell price. Near-term: Same as short-term, but with a 20% gain sell target and a 10% loss buy-in. Mid-term: Same as near-term, but with a 50% gain and loss range. Held forever: To never be sold.

I also instituted a mercy rule for the position, whereby a loss of 20% from baseline or from the past week’s holding would put the security “on notice,” and if that loss persists into the following week, then the holdings will be liquidated. In real life, this would mean cutting your losses and moving on. In the “No BS” fake world, it will be counted as an overall loss for the portfolio.

Top Biotech Stocks To Own For 2018: Ultra Petroleum Corp.(UPL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By STOCKPICKR]

As energy commodity prices have sold off in recent months, so too have the E&P stocks that pull those resources out of the ground. And Ultra Petroleum (UPL) has been no exception. The good news is that you don’t need to be an expert technical trader to figure out why this stock looks toxic here — the setup in shares of Ultra Petroleum is about as simple as they get.

UPL is bouncing its way lower in a textbook downtrending channel, a price setup that’s formed by a pair of parallel trendlines that have kept UPL range-bound since April. The price channel in UPL identifies the high-probability range for shares to stay within, and so, with shares pressing up against resistance for the eighth time since this price channel kicked off, it makes sense to be a seller on the next bounce lower.

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

The Wall Street Journal reported that, “Daimler plans to unveil an electric concept car at (next month’s) Paris Auto show. Leaks suggest this will be accompanied by bullish plans to release at least six electric cars”. Of course, Daimler is already quite advanced in EVs with its partnership in China with BYD. As I write this, the Paris Auto show has begun, where “Daimler Mercedes-Benz unveiled a battery-powered sport-utility vehicle, a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model X, which will have a range of 310 miles on a single charge and is slated to launch in 2020. The vehicle will be part of a new sub-brand of Mercedes called EQ”.

Through an alliance and investment in Nissan in 1999 Renault currently holds 43% of Japanese car manufacturer Nissan. Since 1999 Nissan has performed well and currently Nissan is worth $43B. Nissan is attractively valued with a P/E of 6.9 a P/B of 0.92 and P/S of 0.41 and a dividend yield of 4.2%. Renault’s stake of 43% in Nissan is worth ($43*0.43=) $18.5B. This means that the other operations of Renault including its 73.3% stake in leading Russian car manufacturer AutoVaz and 1.55% stake in Daimler are valued at only $8.5B. The market value of AutoVaz is $644M which means Renaults stake is worth approximately $472M. Daimler (OTCPK:DDAIF) is worth $77.4B which leads to a value of 1.2B for the 1.55% piece owned by Renault.

Best Tech Stocks To Watch For 2018: Trina Solar Limited(TSL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Spencer Israel]

Axiom Capital Managing Director Gordon Johnson upgraded the entire alternative energy sector from Market Underweight to Market Overweight and upgraded SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ: SCTY) from Sell to Hold and Trina Solar Limited (ADR) (NYSE: TSL), Yingli Green Energy Holding Co Ltd (ADR) (NYSE: YGE) and JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. (ADR) (NASDAQ: JASO) from Sell to Buy.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is integrated solar-power products maker Trina Solar (TSL), which is set to release numbers on next Monday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Trina Solar to report revenue of $645.68 million on earnings of 15 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Trina Solar is extremely high at 24.5%. That means that out of the 76.94 million shares in the tradable float, 18.88 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they’re looking for, then shares of TSL could easily rip sharply higher post-earnings as the bears move to cover some of their positions.

From a technical perspective, TSL is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $8.67 to $9.04 a share. Shares of TSL have now started to rebound off those support levels and it’s quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

If you’re bullish on TSL, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.72 to $11.19 a share and then above its 50-day moving average of $11.17 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 5.17 million shares. If that breakout materializes post-earnings, then TSL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $12.49 to $14 a share, or even $14.50 to $15 a share.

I would avoid TSL or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below some near-term support levels at $10 a share to those double bottom support levels at $9.04 to $8

Shares of Menlo Park, California-based social networking giant, Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), have been making solid gains. FB stock price is up over 21% in the year to date, beating the 8.2% rise in Nasdaq Composite (INDEX:COMPX) and 4.9% gains in S&P 500 (INDEX:SPAL). The stock has recently received a flood of upgrades and target price hikes, which means that FB stock, at its last close of $139.6, is still trading 15% below the analyst consensus price target of $160.2 per share. With Instagram growing rapidly, the photo sharing platform could soon become a major contributor to Facebook’s financials and offset any slowdown on the core Facebook platform. Instagram is just one of the many reasons to buy FB stock, but its becoming an increasingly important part of the bullish Facebook theory.
